Singing like your favorite artist can WRECK your Voice |

  • We love to listen to other singers because we love the sound of their voice. But did you know that singing like your favorite artist can WRECK your Voice?
There is no other voice on the planet like yours. Never has been and never will be. Even if we found your vocal doppelganger, we’d still be able to pick out major differences in your tone, vowel shapes and style. Not to mention the shapes, size and dimensions of your vocal anatomy.
We need to embrace all that we were born to be…and not what someone else was born to be. So, when it comes to your voice, I want to encourage you to stop imitating other singers. That’s a dead-end track! Let’s face it, even if you emulate every aspect of your favourite singer’s voice, you’ll still be a poor reflection of the original.

Listening (a lot) to singers, especially those from the 50's to the 70's is very likely one of the best pieces of advice I could give.

I would recommend the 40's as well specifically Sinatra and Bing Crosby. These two in particular have incredible vocal phrasing. And when listening to a track such as Sinatra's 1943 "You'll never Know". Singers should pay attention to the beautifully woven phrases which work in conjunction with his romantic and warm baritone voice.

Sometimes I feel I have too many voice.. later I realize that it's only one voice in different random tones I can create in a sec (when my mood is really Good)
How hard or soft the pressure is on our vocal box plays a huge part here.. the motion of Inhaling and exhaling the lyrics out of our mouth and many other factors can help you easily sing any song with little practice.. I sing mostly from heart.. sometimes I can't stand depressive tones as I start to feel sad while singing.. so I always try listen to something Happy and pleasant randomly out of blue to keep myself in the zone of action.

Well Dr Dan, well said! Why try to be someone when you can be yourself? I often hear people say that they want to emulate a certain singer, "oh, i wish i could sing like Ed Sheeran", " I want adam lovine's voice!" The thing is many people do not understand that copying someone does not mean you only copy their sound, but you end up copying and imitating bad habits. Ed Sheeran for example, so many people love his voice even though it's full of extraneous musculature and tension(not discrediting his hard work and contemporary music writing genius). It's just a pity how many people only see the surface and are not knowledgable enough to discern a good singer from a bad one and try to copy their idol.

Oh such timely advice Dr Dan! I've been feeling rather "cookie-cutter-biscuity", if not down right "blob-of- dough-squashed-by-frustrated-fist biscuity" recently. Maybe others can relate?
And watching the late great Karen Carpenter to boot.(if you had to have someone else's voice , whose would you choose? She's my answer hands down)
Needed to hear your advice and the word "unique".. will be working on it with a better mind set from now on!
    Cheers,
    Lin.

I am always plaguing myself with that. I am a baritone/bass who frequently tries to sing like Michael Crawford, my favorite actor/singer who was Phantom of the Opera in London, Broadway and Los Angeles. As my brother would say, "Don't hurt yourself" and I didn't think that I was hurting myself. I have since learned to emulate certain aspects of his singing expertise, but not his voice. No other Phantom actor would, so why should I?

I know there's a lot of information about that, but I wanna know your opinion please,it would be really Appreciated.I am 17,my voice got a lot deeper but mutation is not over still.I am a baritone, can go up to f4-g4 chest before the passagio. But my vocal coach(she is a pure classic singer) says probably my voice will turn higher and lighter before my mutation will be totally over, what do you think about that,is that possible that I will be a tenor? And if so,what can I do to make it happen.Waiting for an answer, thanks!!

theres nothing wrong with emulating greatness that's what your supposed to do, like emulating Jesus. I try to sing like Ronnie James Dio everyday and it's only made me a better singer than I've ever been. I woudnt recommend trying to emulate some mediocre pop star though.

    • @ryshlovanoodo7591
      @ryshlovanoodo7591 6 лет назад +1

I'm sure if Ronnie tried to sound like someone else and not find his own sound then he woudnt have developed his unique style of singing so your actually right but I woudnt mind being an excact copy of Ronnie, I try and rip off every part of his voice lol.

Partly true but such advise doesn't help. Some of the greatest temporary voices have been born out of copying other artists. Actually most of them became what they are by copying other artists, and not because they had a coach. Denying the learning capacity behind copying limits the potential of growth.

He said that you can copy some things, like phrasing, but don't try to copy the tone
